I’ve thought of taking apart a mechanical pencil and improving it somehow to make it work better. I need some ideas on how to realistically improve it. Thanks!

What is wrong with the way they work now? If it works, don’t fix it.
Add a jackscrew mechanism to enable precise advancement/retardation of the chuck/lead, and an eraser extractor (I always wear thos devils down flush and need a drywall screw to remove them.)
Reverse engineering is not what you are talking about. See the site below.
What you are talking about is “forward” engineering. That is, making something better not just understanding how it is made.
Re design the pencil to suit to your needs. You can make use of a Rapid prototyping tool like SLS.
Well!!!!!!!!!
Reverse engineering (RE) is the process of discovering the technological principles of a device, object or system through analysis of its structure, function and operation. It often involves taking something apart and analyzing its workings in detail to be used in maintenance, or to try to make a new device or program that does the same thing without utilizing any physical part of the original.
Thus, you can just make a new pencil by reverse Engineering !!!!!!!
To improve a pencil, you need not use reverse Engineering!!!!!!!!
But, here are some suggestions:
* Eco-Friendly pencils
* The shedding of graphite during sharpening can be minimised
